A Little Dog Angel

High up in the courts of heaven today
a little dog angel waits;
with the other angels he will not play,
but he sits alone at the gates.
"For I know my master will come" says he,
"and when he comes he will call for me."

The other angels pass him by
As they hurry toward the throne,
And he watches them with a wistful eye
as he sits at the gates alone.
"But I know if I just wait patiently
that someday my master will call for me."

And his master, down on earth below,
as he sits in his easy chair,
forgets sometimes, and whispers low
to the dog who is not there.
And the little dog angel cocks his ears
and dreams that his master's voice he hears.

And when at last his master waits
outside in the dark and cold,
for the hand of death to open the door,
that leads to those courts of gold,
he will hear a sound through the gathering dark,
a little dog angel's bark.

Losing one of these guys is tough at any time.   It breaks my heart, but I know I gave these guys the best opportunities I could possibly provide.  They were loved dearly during their stay here with me and those that went to their loving homes had the very best.

Bubbles
Rescued 04/20/2022 Approximately 12  years
Bubbles was rescued from one of our WA shelters.  Their vet thought she was about 10,. I suspect she was older than that.  Bubbles was super sweet, had lots of loves to give and she passed held in loving arms.

Fancy
Rescued 03/05/2020 - 04/02/2022 Approximately 14 + years
Fancy was rescued from the CA shelter system.  She was placed with Candice shortly after her arrival with us.  Message from Candice:  "Fancy you’re my beautiful girl. You were a fighter for life and proved it time and time again. I love you so much and I will see you again. I love you, Mom"

Lilly Lou
Rescued 2010 - 12/30/2021 Approximately 11 + years
Lilly was rescued10/23/2013 from a hoarding situation.  We placed her until 04/2020 when the owner's health declined and she was no longer able to care for her.  She was placed with Candice 05/2020 where she was very much loved to the end of her life.  Message from Candice. "Lilly Lou had an amazing spirit.  She was soooo independent.  I will love her and miss her always."

Mookie
Rescued 12/26/2020 - 12/27/2020 Approximately 13 + years

You can find videos of Mookie in his chair on our fb page.
https://www.facebook.com/DisplacedPetsRescue/videos/?ref=page_internal

Mooke was a joy to have with us for nearly a year.  He had so much love to give.  Mookie loved to great the visitors and would wheel up to them so that he could rub his cheek on their leg.  Such a strong stubborn little guy. Now he is running on all four legs. I kept some his progress notes here with his memory.

06/07/2021 Update - Mookie's condition has progressed.  He is doing well, but is no longer able to stand at all.  He is truly a hospice case and needs the same level of attention that a baby would need.   He needs to be in his chair multiple times through the day. We have set up elevated food and water dishes so that he can eat and drink on his own from the chair.  He loves to go outside and run around the driveway.  Some days he has more movement energy than others.  His feet turn under so he needs his little booties when he is in the chair.  We only leave him in the chair for about an hour or two at a time so that he isn't getting sore at all from it.  When hanging out in the living room he will ask to be turned over and sometimes will move himself in circles.  The circling is great exercise.

03/10/2021 Update -  Mookie has some neurological issues that are affecting his walking.  Our Vet assures us that he is not in pain of any kind. He does great early in the day, walking fine in his senior gate.  As he gets tired he will tip himself over and often time is not able to get standing again.  He calls "Help, I've fallen and can't get up."  Sometimes we can stand him back up and he takes off, but others he isn't able to maintain any balance.  We do have a quad wheel chair ordered for him that should be arriving any day now.  We are very excited to see how he does with that chair.

Upon Entry 12/26 - Mookie just wants a place he can hang out.  He is not a bit lap cuddlier, but will settle on the couch beside me.   He is sweet and definitely shows his age.  We are working to get a bit of weight on him.  He has been a little picky about his food and his blood work shows he might be having some pancreatic issues.    He also has a mild heart murmur.  He is such an easy going little guy, so accepting of everything around him.  We believe he is mostly deaf and has very limited vision issues.  He has a docked tail so I would suspect he is at least part miniature pincher.

Babette "Babby"
Rescued 12/26/2020 - 12/27/2020

Babette came to us with advanced heart issues.  She was doing quite well on her medications, but went into cardio distress and passed away quietly in my arms.  Such a sweet little girl who had lived and loved well.

Vinnie
Adoption date 11/30/2012 - 11/04/2020

From Missy
his adopter, "It is with great sadness that I write to you today to tell you that Vinnie crossed over the Rainbow Bridge last night. He was in no distress and passed peacefully at our home where are currently stationed in upstate NY!  We have loved every minute with him over the last eight years! I dropped him with our vet this morning and we will have his ashes back next Friday.

Thank you for everything and blessing us with this sweet boy who lit up our lives! His presence is missed greatly already by myself and my boys! I know it will hit my husband fully once he returns home from deployment later this year."

Bolt
DOB 08/2008 - Rescued 08/18/2018 - Adoption date 09/15/2018 - 02/20/2020

from Candice his adopter "Boltee you were a wonderful light in the mornings and a certain calm at night.
I love you and I will miss you... until we meet again. Love ❤️, Mom"

Baby Lilly
DOB 07/10/2019 - 07/26/2019

Lilly's momma came to us just a day before her puppies were delivered.  Within the first day I discovered that she had a cleft pallet.  I began tube feeding her, but as with a lot of clef babies, she developed pneumonia.  She had doubled her body weight since arriving, but her tiny 8 ounce body just couldn't recover.  Sweet baby Lilly is how sleeping with the angels.

Luna (aka Bunny) - rescued April 17, 2010,
placed in home May 02, 2010
passed April 2019 - approximately 11 years old.
Such a sweet girl who came from a home of neglect and into a home of love and comfort.  From Melissa, her adopter "Luna was my shadow, and I miss her very much.  she made people smile and laugh everywhere she went."

Pip - rescued January 11, 2018 passed March 22, 2019 - approximately 10-15 years old.
During his short time with us we worked hard to find a hospice home for Pip.  When he arrived with us we knew his little old body was failing him.  He had good days where you would never know how old he was and we loved him through the bad ones.  Rescuing senior kids is so very difficult.   He passed away here with us knowing he was safe and loved.

Sparkie - rescued September 15, 2018 passed October 3, 2018 - approximately 8-10 years old.
Sparkie was a sweet little guy.  He was working hard on getting his weight back and was doing great.  The time before the shelter and his time in the shelter was just to much for him and he passed in my arms.

Cerise - rescued November 19, 2017 passed February 26, 2018 - approximately 10 years old.
Cerise arrived in cardiac distress.  After getting her on good heart meds the distressed eased.  We were working to place her in a hospice home, to have her pass away in her sleep.  We are comforted to know that she was cuddled and loved during her time here and didn't pass away in a cold and terrifying shelter.

Chance - passed August 24, 2017 - approximately 10 years old.
Chance was with us such a short time.  When getting his vet care we found mouth cancer that had penetrated his throat and lungs.  His trachea was nearly completely collapsed and his heart was working overtime to keep him going.  We made that horrible choice to allow Chance his peace and let him pass on to Rainbow Bridge.  He had love and comfort from every person along his journey and we are thankful that he didn't go through this end of life alone.

Precious - rescued August 26 - passed October 29, 2016 - approximately 10 years old.
One of the most heartbreaking things we encounter in senior dog rescue are dogs that pass shortly after we get them.  Precious was a super sweet and loving girl who passed peacefully in her soft bed.  She is no longer in pain from her bad hips and knees, she is running happily through the fields loving her new home.

River - arrived August 14 - passed October 12, 2016 - approximately 10-15 years
River had two months in our home before passing away quietly in her sleep.  These are the difficult sad things that we get with the senior kids.  She was much loved during the short
time she spent with us.

Prince - September 27, 2016 - approximately 7-10 years
We tried so hard with Prince.  He came to us with a large tumor on his side and kidney failure.  After removal from the shelter he went to our Calif vet where he stayed for about a week on IV fluids.  After the kidney values had improved he went into a foster that was able to get him eating and well enough to transport to Oregon.  Here we determined that removing his tumor and getting a dental (very badly abscessing teeth) was the best route to help him continue his improvement.  Sadly two days following his surgery he went into kidney and renal failure and passed away.  This one was so hard - we took what we felt was the best route for him to have a chance at recovery.

My heart hurts from this loss - My love flows to every single person who helped us help Prince.  All of the love and support that flowed to him gave him the best chance we could offer him.  From the time he was removed from the shelter he knew love and compassion.  He knew homes, gentle touches and was kept out of pain.  He passed away in the arms of someone who cared very much for him.  Now he is romping with the angels, out of pain and free.

Coco -
Rescued Sept. 28, 2015 - Feb. 2
5, 2016
12 - 15 years old.
Coco lost his elderly owner before coming to us.
Making the final decision for these guys is one of those things I wish I never had to do.  Coco's health dictated his need to cross rainbow bridge and find the owner who loved him his entire life.

Quizmet - Rescued October 29, 2015 - February 22, 2016
12 - 15 years old.  "RIP Quizmet, we will never forget you."

Trace - Jan 27, 2014 - Oct 20, 2015
Sadly Trace had to short of time with his new home.  "Trace passed on Oct 20.  He had problems from the beginning. I did everything I could to give him the best life he could have and to see him decline broke my heart. For the 21 months I was blessed to have his love and companionship there wasn't a moment of regret that we adopted him. He wasn't with us nearly long enough. Knowing what I know now, I'd still have taken him. I will miss him always.

I hope you are doing well and I thank you for allowing Trace to come to us."

Cara - May 25, 2015
Cara was part of our 2011 Mass Rescue, she lived, loved and was adored by my grand daughter Samantha.  We believe she was about 13 years old.  "RIP Sweet Baby Girl♡ Mama loves you and will miss you!

You saved my heart in so many ways, God knew I needed you, and you comforted me through so many hard times, and you celebrated many good times.♡♡♡"

Annie - February 27, 2015
almost 13 years
Annie was placed by us in 2012 and thrived in the three years of her life when cancer overcame her little body.  Her family was blessed by her sweetness.

Fancy - February, 19 2015
approximately 11 years
"It is with great sadness that I am writing this email. On the morning of February 19, we had to lay Fancy to rest. She was in her usual happy friendly self but we woke up with her breathing heavy. We took her to the emergency vet. She did well on oxygen throughout the night but then all of a sudden took a turn for the worse. She needed be intubated to breath. The vet thought she needed to be mechanically ventilated if not intubated. Sadly we had to let her go.

I just wanted to thank you for giving us the opportunity to have Fancy in our lives. Even though our time with her was short, we loved and adored her incredibly. She will be greatly missed.

- Cheryl"

Taffy - December 26th, 2014
approximately 4 years
"Our little girl is running free in heaven now. We only had her 10 short months. She developed a rare pneumonia which took her away from us. We miss her so very much! Taffy was the most loving little girl. Our other two fur babies miss her as well. I know we will see her again someday, but for now she can watch over us from the other side. We miss her cute little bark and her bouncing little body as she ran with her two sisters guard us every time the door bell rang. Rest in peace my little sweet heart, you were and are still so very loved! Until we can all be together again, we will miss you!

your loving mommy."

Maggie - June 17, 2014 - approximately 15-18 years
Maggie came to us looking for a hospice home with advanced age and multiple senior issues.  We were not able to find that home, but she spent the last of her days knowing loving touches and gentle care.  Even with best of vet care God needed her as one of his angels.  We are glad that we were able to help ease her through her final days.

Tiger - November 26, 2013 - approximately 9 years
Tiger's passing took us by surprise.  He came to us originally in 2010 from and was placed in a home at that time.  He returned to us, three years later, when his family situation changed no longer leaving a place for him.  Placement failures like this frustrate me as we go to great lengths to make the best choice possible for the dog and the family.  Tiger spent a few months here in my loving arms again before he passed away.
He is now frolicking with the angels a happy dog.

Foster - October 24, 2013 - 13 years
It is on of the toughest things ever when our little guys leave us.  Even though he was a senior Foster's passing was much sooner than we anticipated.  We take comfort in knowing that he has know love and now have an even sweeter love with the angels.

Timer - September 18, 2013
22 years

Timer was nothing if not a tough little cus.  He charmed us completely and his loss is greatly felt.  He was the rescue I couldn't place.  I feel completely in love with this little man.  We are so appreciative of the two short years he spent here with us and selfishly wish it could have been more.
Rest in Peace little man.

Mimi - January 2013 - 8 years
Mimi spent 6 months in our home being loved and cared for where she had never had that care before.  We thought she was on the road to recovery, but God knew that this little one needed to be in his care.

Solo - August 2011
approximately 11 years
Solo's little heart just couldn't handle the stress of all that he had been through.
He now rests in peace.

Lend Me A Pup
-Author Unknown

I will lend to you for awhile a puppy, God said,
For you to love him while he lives
and to mourn for him when he is gone.
Maybe for twelve or fourteen years,
or maybe for two or three
But will you, till I call him back
take care of him for me?

He'll bring his charms to gladden you
and when his job is over
you'll always have his memories
as solace for your grief.

I cannot promise how long that he will stay,
since all from earth return,
But there are lessons taught below
I want this pup to learn.

I've looked the whole world over
in search of teachers true
And from the folk that crowd life's land
I have chosen you.
Now will you give him all your love
Nor think the labor vain
Nor hate me when I come to take my pup back again.

I fancied that I heard them say
"Dear Lord Thy Will Be Done,"
For all the joys this pup will bring,
the risk of grief you'll run.
Will you shelter him with tenderness
Will you love him while you may
And for the happiness you'll know forever grateful stay.

But should I call him back
much sooner than you've planned
Please brave the bitter grief that comes
and try to understand.
If, by your love, you've managed
my wishes to achieve,
In memory of him that you've loved,
cherish every moment with your faithful bundle,
and know he loved you too.

Compassion for animals is intimately connected with goodness of character; and it may be confidently asserted that he who is cruel to animals cannot be a good man.
