Now she is receiving all the love and attention she has been missing her whole life.

-Hunter-
Hunter is a California Rescue.  We found him in sick bay with his crate hiding under a blanket.  His birth defect of the spine ended up being the least of his issues.  He was literally starving and had a severe staph infection that covered one of his lungs.  The first set of x-rays gave the appearance that one of his lungs was collapsed.  It also showed what looked to be an enlarged heart.  We did a biopsy and determined that he had a staph infection.  After the first two rounds of antibiotics for the staph infection we did another x-ray and could see significant decrease in the infection and improvement in the heart.  We had also seen a huge improvement in his outlook and weight.  We continued his antibiotics for another round then opted to address the most severe of is surgery issues.  We repaired an hernia, did a crypt orchid neuter and removed the infected teeth where we believe the staph infection had gotten in.  At this point we decided since the spine defect was not causing him pain or decreased mobility that we were not going to attempt a dangerous surgery there.

It took a very special placement for Hunter since the staph infection will always affect him.  He will be prone to them in the future and need to be watched very closely.  He will also have scaring on his lungs and possibly his heart from the infection creating other sensitivity.  Debbie was so up for giving him his forever loving home and he will thrive under her care.

This next set of pictures were when Hunter first arrived.  He was with us for four months.

I miss you Mommy Christy.

I went on a very long car ride with my new family today.  It was interesting!  Us kids got to ride in the back seat and it rained almost all the way home.  Daddy stopped the car at a place called a rest stop. My new brother, Mocha, and I got to walk with my new Daddy in a really fun wooded area and mark our spots.  I wagged my tail the whole time!!  Then we walked back to the car where Mommy had some  water ready for both of us to drink. My new  Mommy and Daddy told me I did great in the car and I think my brother thought so too as he seemed to like me much better after that.  When we got to my new home Mocha and I went into our play yard.  It was fun to run around with Mommy and Mocha in the yard.  Mocha tried to get me to chase the ball but I let him have all the attention for awhile because I could see that he needed it.   Then in we went to a kitchen with 2 big bowls of water.   There was a cat there in a scooter thing.  Can you believe that?  Mommy and Daddy told me that I was the 1st animal ever to come in their house for the VERY 1st time and not get hissed at by the cat.  The cat and I sniffed each other and then she kissed my nose!  Nice kitty, my new sister.

But  then, the real excitement began---DINNER! I couldn't help myself stop spinning!  I stayed in the kitchen and spinned and Mocha ran around squeaking his ball.  I think my new sister the cat thinks we are both crazy the way she stood there and watched. That lucky cat sure did have some great smelling food though. I didn't get to taste it because Mommy said "No."  That's OK because she mixed some stuff she called pumpkin in with my food and it was "delicious!"

After dinner, Mommy made a nice bed up for me with my blanket and gave me a big white stuffed bunny!  Imagine that!  A great big stuffed bunny!  I ran when I saw it!  I guess Mocha likes big things like that--NOT me!  That's OK though because Mommy said she'll figure out what I like and then I'll get my own toy box.  Pretty nice!  Oh and Guess what, Christy! Mommy promised me that I would stay with her forever and ever!  She hugs me a lot and so does Daddy.

I really like my new Daddy .  He left the house to go to the store and when he came back I was so excited!  I wagged my tail, jumped up on Daddy and barked my happy hello!  I could tell by the way Mocha joined in and everyone laughed that I was a hit!  Daddy got his camera and took some pictures of my 1st day at home to take to work tomorrow.

Oh my, it is getting late and I think Mocha and me are going to go to bed.  So I just wanted to tell you Thank You, Mommy Christy!  You have been so good to me.  You rescued me when I needed it the most and then you cleaned me up and cared for me in the most special way!  You made me see that life is worth living and I am so excited to see what tomorrow brings.  I will always love you!

-Betty-

-Carl-

Carl is a success story where we were able to keep this little guy in his home (Carl is not counted as a placement).  Mom and Dad were lost trying to juggle a new baby with a demanding little Pomeranian/Pekinese mix.  They were feeling guilty about he amount of quality time they were spending with him as well as worries about the rapidly "becoming mobile" baby.  We were able to work through some training suggestions and tools with Carl's parents and show them that having a baby doesn't mean they can't have a dog.  It means working through the issues and coming up with solutions for the entire family.  Carl's family left with renewed love of their little guy and the confidence to move forward with some wonderful new ideas, as well as a connection for support that they didn't realize was available for them.  Carl's tail was definitely a happy tail.

-Boogie Woogie Bear-

Here are some bits of an email from Boogies new family.  Boggie was placed with the intention of him becoming a service dog for Gary, letting them know if Gary needs assistance.
What a great connection.

"It took Boo about 15 minutes to learn the doggie door led to food and water in the garage area. it took about another 15 of him to understand that the second door got him outside. He spent the rest of the day running in and out of the doggie doors, like he thought it was a new toy. Seems he will play with anything he can get his teeth on. doesn't matter what it is , my wife's purse, Gary's suction my books & papers, plugs, electrical cords. I found out my game console didn't work because Boo had pulled it out of the console.

I was taking a nap on couch on Sunday afternoon, all of a sudden the coverlet was ripped off of me and I looked and saw the dog sitting on it with one end in his mouth.

I wondered where he would sleep as he would not go into the kennel nor would he lay down in the dogs bed. finally I went to bed to let him work it out. Followed me to the bedroom but would run out when I shut the door and then scratched on the door to get back in. I finally decided he had to have the door opened.  Boo came over and growled with his feet on the bed so I put the dog blanket on the bed and put him on the bed. he pulled both corners to the center of the bed , went to head and with his snout lifted and pushed the blanket into a roll and pushed it off the bed. After jumping on the floor he unrolled the blanket and positioned it where he could see me and the doorway. he then laid down and slept on the blanket he threw off the bed. what an unusual animal he is.

Boogie watches Gary closely and goes to the back bedroom to check on him periodically. If Gary needs attention and Patrice goes to his room, boogie will follow her and sit and watch her take care of Gary. This dog is tuned to every move and noise in the house and outside.

Boogies is constantly digging out items from various places to chew on or toss and play. The incident with the paper bag had Gary in stitches for the whole morning and Gary and Patrice think he is more entertaining than television.

Boogie is now going outside to potty and I feel he will be totally house broken by end of the week. I don't think I have seen a smarter puppy anywhere. For the first time since Jewell died I have slept all night because I just am more relaxed at night now. Jewell, the month before she died, pounced on me in the middle of the night and awakened me to noises in the garage. I got up and set her on the floor and she made a beeline for the garage and hit the door flap at top speed. I heard her grown and a swearword and then my bike hit the floor. by the time I got there and turned on the light the intruder was gone. the door was opened and a vehicle was speeding down the street.

Jewell gave me this sense of security knowing she would do anything she could to protect us. I feel this same sense of security with Boogie as he has already alerted us to arrival of vehicle in front of the house and at the door. While we had company he kept his eyes open and on the newcomer. He is already doing the nose touch to get my attention and so I think he will learn to do it if Gary needs attention .

... He sits and lays down on command now and goes to the back door when he wants to be let out at night. If we don't see him at the door he will let us know vocally that he wants out. During the day he is using the doggie doors.

We think Boogie was made just for us and thank you for your  efforts to find us our Boogie Woogie...  Words are not enough to express our appreciation."                                                 - Steve, Patrice, and Gary

-Chica-
Chica was one of our long term clients.  She was rescued from being put to sleep in a California Shelter just by the hair of her tail.  Chica suffered from separation anxiety.  She does great as long as she can be with you.  If you leave her alone though she would make herself frantic trying to get to you.  The solution with Chica is that when you are gone she goes into her kennel.  She was with us over a year and went to a wonderful home where she will be cherished for the rest of her life.

-Angel-

Angel was surrendered to us along with another Pom as the owner being no longer able to care for them.  Angel was hugely overweight and beginning to have health issues related to obesity.  At twice the weight she should have been her whole body was suffering.  She was having problems breathing, had a re-occurring injury to her knee, and was now having heart issues.  A few days later I received a note indicating that mom was sunk into depression and felt she had made a horrible mistake in giving Angel up.  She didn't realize how much she needed her.  I made the decision to let Angel go back, on the condition that mom work with me in getting Angel back to a healthy weight, with the diet we started her on, and exercise with walks.  Where I don't consider this a placement, it is a success for Angel and her mom, as mom was able to recognize that Angel gives as much care as she needs.  Mom has recognized that Angel's obesity was killing her and that she needed to take responsibility for getting her healthy again.

-Maggie-

Happy Anniversary to us! Happy Anniversary to us!! Happy Anniversary to Maggie and Me!!! Happy Anniversary to us!!!!  Yep, one whole year ago today, my niece drove me out to Vernonia, and I was introduced to the sweetest little dog in the world (you may disagree, as you have your own little sweetest dog(s) in the world).

Maggie has been the best blessing for me in 2013 and the blessing will continue for many years. In fact my therapist even says "who needs anti-depressants with Maggie around". She really has been such a joy. I must admit when I ventured into this I wasn't 1000% sure that I really wanted the responsibility of another dog, but she has worked out beautifully! She prefers 'going' outside, and when I have the strength/energy to take her, I always do, but she is meticulous about using the pee pads when that's all that's available.

As I type, she's curled up in the cat bed closest to the computer. She never leaves my side, and when she can't be in my lap, she takes the bed closest to me.  To celebrate today, she got a real beef bone with a smear of peanut butter inside...one of her favorite treats.

It took about 5 months, but she eventually won over 2 of the 3 cats (the third will never happen, kitty is too much of a 'spook', but they do at least share my bed now). I have one cat who also loves to snuggle, so they have it worked out amongst themselves...Maggie in my lap, and Taz curled up on the arm of the chair next to me...they'll even stretch toward each other to touch noses.

So we're celebrating in 'style' today...she'll get a few treats throughout the day, and I get to celebrate with a dog curled up in my lap! Who could ask for better?
